PictureMr Parsons discusses rationing with the audience.
On the morning of Tuesday 29 April 2014 Parsons Period Presentations presented to years 3-4 to give their leap pad a boost to begin the Spring School term subject of Britain since the 1930’s.

The three classes took it in turns to visit Mr Parsons the greengrocer in his shop and were all amazed at the fugal weekly adult ration allocation.  Whilst Mr Parsons weighed out the ration for: tea, butter, lard and cheese all the students felt particularly surprised to learn that sweets were rationed and were delighted to sample a mint imperial each!

The children were rotated through three classrooms.  Therefore the class that was visiting Mr Parsons in his shop learnt about the pre decimalisation currency that was in use in Great Britain from the time of Henry II until 1971.  The other two classes rotated between hands on history displays.  The children had a quiz which they needed to complete in the twenty five minutes before rotation.  All items were supplied by Parsons Period Presentations and included among other things battledress uniforms, webbing, medals and 1940’s official leaflets and paperwork.

Following break time, the culmination of the Parsons Period Presentation visit,  was Warden Parsons telling the entire year group all about the part time nature of his ARP duties.  Also the blackout the blitz and a demonstration, with volunteers in the use of a stirrup pump to be used in the case of incendiary bombs.  The year group were shown examples of air raid shelters in use throughout the War before Warden Parsons departed back to 1941.

In summary this was a successful and enjoyable example of how Parsons Period Presentations can support children’s learning by experiencing hands on history.
